What you need to know about Facelift in Belfast

Also known as the Rhytidectomy. This type of surgery is used to give the face a more youthful appearance. Multiple techniques can be used, with the main procedure involving the removal of excess facial skin, tightening underlying tissues and re-draping (tightening) the skin of both the face and neck. Facelifts are often combined with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) or other facial procedures under general anesthetic. Incisions are usually behind the ears, leaving little to no obvious scarring.

With time, the elasticity of the skin is reduced and wrinkles, lines, and bags appear. These changes depend on both genetic and external factors such as smoking, alcohol intake, diet, exercise, sun exposure, changes in weight as well as chemicals applied to the skin. Illness and its treatment may also quicken the aging process and result in a person feeling uncomfortable about their appearance.

Many chose to have a facelift to achieve smoother skin and to have a more alert appearance. The aim is to improve the appearance of primarily the lower two-thirds of the face. The most common reason that both men and women seek facelift surgery, is a concern about a sagging jaw-line or bands in the neck area. A facelift can also have a rejuvenating effect on the areas below the eyes and the deep lines from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth. As it’s not possible to eliminate every line and wrinkle with a facelift, some patients may also undergo injection treatments or non-surgical skin rejuvenating treatments like chemical peels or laser treatment to get the best results.

Facelift, Before and After

The Procedure

There is no stopping aging and you cannot escape the physical effects of becoming old. As you age, the appearance and shape of your face changes. Your skin becomes looser and less elastic. Some fat deposits reduce in some areas of your face and increase on others.

Your age is not the main factor in knowing if you are a good candidate for the procedure or not. A lot of patients who undergo this surgery are between the ages of 40 to 70 years old and even people older than 70 can also benefit from it.

Initially, before you undergo the procedure, the very first thing you have to do is to consult your surgeon. During your consultation, be prepared to discuss the following:

  • Your goals and expectations for your facelift
  • Medical history
  • Current health and medications (vitamins, supplements, alcohol or drug use)
  • Whether you are smoking
  • Facelift options

Ideal candidates for the treatment procedure are:

  • Nonsmokers
  • People with a positive outlook and realistic expectations
  • Healthy individuals that do not have medical conditions that might intervene with the healing process

One of the most important things that you should discuss with your surgeon is your facelift options. Choosing the right type of facelift for you will depend on the specific area you want to target. Your facelift options may include a traditional full facelift, mid facelift, mini facelift, lower facelift, thread facelift, and neck lift.

Before your actual procedure, you may be asked to do the following:

  • Stop smoking
  • Get a lab test or medical evaluation
  • Apply preoperative facial skin products
  • Take certain medications or adjust your current medication
  • Avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin, and herbal supplements because these can increase bruising and bleeding.

In terms of aesthetics, your surgeon will recommend the best choice for your own comfort. You may have the option to receive intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.

During the actual treatment procedure, the fat in your face and neck may be sculpted, removed or redistributed. Your facial skin will then be re-draped over your newly repositioned facial contours, some of the excess skin will be removed and the wound will be stitched or taped closed.

Length of stay in Belfast

Facelift surgery generally takes 2 to 4 hours but might take even longer if other cosmetic surgery procedures are performed at the same time. In most cases, patients are allowed to go home a few hours after the surgery. However, some patients opt to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days after the surgery.

Your doctor will want to see you for follow up check-ups in the first week to monitor your swelling and bruising and to remove your stitches, but you should expect to stay in Belfast for at least 7-10 days post-op before flying home.

Recovery Time

The first 3 to 5 days are the most difficult because you will be experiencing swelling, bruising and some serious discomfort. Strenuous activities must also be avoided. In roughly about 5 to 6 weeks, you may be allowed to return back to some of your exercise routines. It will usually take 2 to 3 months for your face to feel normal in terms of sensibility, texture, and loss of tightness.

Success Rate

Over 80% - 90% of patients undergoing Rhytidectomy experience a significant positive result after their treatment procedure. In some other cases, optimal results may not be achieved in just a single surgical procedure, a follow-up surgery may be necessary.

However, just like any type of surgery, possible risks and complications can be expected. These risks and complications may include the following:

  • Scarring
  • Nerve injury
  • Hematoma
  • Hair loss
  • Skin loss

Some of these risks may be managed with the appropriate medication and surgical correction. You also have to be aware that some long term or permanent complications, although very rare, may affect your appearance.

Alternatives to Facelift

It is true that the face is primarily the most concern of both men and women. While a lot of people are not brave enough to undergo facelift surgery, there are other non-surgical options available:

  • Mini-facelift - a less invasive procedure that also aims to lift the wrinkles and sagging skin in the lower part of the face. Because it involves a smaller, s-shaped incision around the ear, it cannot address neck sagging or excess skin.
  • Botox - it reduces the appearance of wrinkles and usually takes about 24 to 72 hours to take effect. A botox injection uses botulinum toxin to temporarily paralyze muscle activity.
  • Fillers - unlike botox, fillers fill the line, crease, or the general facial area with different kinds of substances. These fillers can be used as “volumizers”, plumping and lifting your cheeks, jawline, and temple.
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing - this works to give you a younger-looking facial skin by removing some skin layer by layer. Patients can get rid of scars, wrinkles, acne marks and blotches.

  • Ultherapy - this uses ultrasound to heat targeted tissue under the surface of your skin. The heat will then trigger the natural production of collagen. This procedure can be repeated 6 to 12 months because collagen usually takes very long to develop.
  • LED - light emitting diode therapy uses a variety of different colored lights to target various parts of your face. This is a pain-free procedure that treats acne, fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentations, acne scars, and rosacea.
  • Thermage - this is a radiofrequency cosmetic procedure that helps improve and smooth your skin by tightening existing collagen and stimulating the production of your collagen. This procedure treats fine lines, wrinkles, dimples skin and cellulite.
