Gastric Sleeve Cost in Turkey vs Mexico: 2026 Prices

What a gastric sleeve, bypass or balloon costs in Turkey and in Mexico, how the two compare once travel is included, who is eligible and what to check before booking.

Mymeditravel

Updated September 2026. Prices in this guide come from the starting prices clinics list on MyMediTravel, converted to US dollars. Each range runs from the lower quarter to the upper quarter of those listings, so the cheapest and most expensive outliers are left out.

Turkey and Mexico are the two biggest destinations for weight-loss surgery abroad. Turkey draws patients from the UK, Europe and the Middle East; Mexico, and Tijuana in particular, draws patients from the US and Canada. Both offer the gastric sleeve for a fraction of the price at home.

On MyMediTravel, 65 clinics in Turkey and 20 in Mexico list a price for a gastric sleeve. The typical starting price is $2,600 to $3,600 in Turkey and $4,400 to $5,350 in Mexico. This guide compares the two, covers the other weight-loss operations, and explains what to check before you book.

Turkey or Mexico?

  • Price. Turkey is typically $1,500 to $2,000 cheaper for a sleeve, before travel.
  • Distance. From the US and Canada, Tijuana is minutes from San Diego and many programmes collect patients from San Diego airport. From the UK and Europe, Istanbul and Antalya are a four-hour flight. For most people the cheaper option is the one closer to home once flights and time off are added.
  • Follow-up. Weight-loss surgery needs months of dietary follow-up and lifelong vitamin checks. Being able to return to your surgeon, or at least speak to them easily, matters more than for most operations.
  • Packages. Clinics in both countries usually sell all-inclusive packages covering tests, the operation, three or four nights in hospital, a hotel and transfers. Check exactly what is included.

Sleeve, bypass or balloon?

  • Gastric sleeve removes around three-quarters of the stomach, leaving a narrow tube. It is the most common weight-loss operation worldwide and cannot be reversed.
  • Gastric bypass creates a small stomach pouch connected directly to the small intestine. It usually costs more and is often preferred for people with severe acid reflux or type 2 diabetes.
  • Gastric balloon is a temporary, non-surgical option: a balloon placed in the stomach through the mouth and removed after six to twelve months. It suits people who need to lose less weight or who are not eligible for surgery.

Which is right depends on your weight, your health and your history, which is why a proper assessment matters more than the price.

Who is eligible?

Most surgeons follow international guidelines: generally a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or more, or 30 or more with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Be wary of a clinic that accepts anyone without asking about your medical history, medicines and previous attempts to lose weight.

Before and after the operation

  • Expect a pre-operative diet, usually one to two weeks of low-calorie or liquid meals to shrink the liver.
  • Most patients spend two to four nights in hospital and stay in the country for about a week before flying.
  • For the first weeks you move from liquids to soft food to normal textures, following the clinic's plan.
  • You will need vitamin and mineral supplements for life, and regular blood tests. Arrange follow-up with your own doctor or a dietitian at home before you go.

Our guide to aftercare, insurance and paying for treatment abroad covers what to arrange before you travel and once you are home.

How to choose a clinic

  • Ask how many sleeve operations the surgeon performs each year, and what their leak and readmission rates are.
  • Check who looks after you afterwards: is there a dietitian, and how do you reach the team once you are home?
  • Get a written quote listing everything included, and ask what happens, and who pays, if you need to stay longer.
  • Be wary of very low prices and of clinics that book you in without a consultation.

A few of the clinics that list gastric sleeve prices on MyMediTravel: in Turkey, SALUSS Medical Center in Antalya, and Clinic Bariatric, e-TurkishDoctors (JCI accredited) and Dorak Health in Istanbul; in Mexico, CosMed Clinic and Go Light Bariatrics in Tijuana, Real Bariatrics in Mexicali and Hospital Galenia in Cancún (JCI accredited). Being listed here is not a recommendation. See our checks and questions for your hospital and doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a gastric sleeve so much cheaper in Turkey?

Hospital, staff and running costs are lower, competition for international patients is intense, and many surgeons perform a very high number of operations. Mexico is cheaper than the US for similar reasons, but its costs are higher than Turkey's.

How much weight will I lose?

Most patients lose a large share of their excess weight over the first 12 to 18 months, but results depend heavily on following the diet and exercise plan. Ask your surgeon what to expect for someone with your starting weight.

How long do I need to stay?

Plan on about a week: two to four nights in hospital, then a few days nearby so the team can check you before you fly.

Is a gastric sleeve reversible?

No. Part of the stomach is removed permanently. A gastric balloon is the temporary alternative.
