The parotid gland may harbour benign or malignant conditions. The facial nerve also runs through the parotid gland making it one of the more delicate operations in the head and neck region.

During parotid gland surgery, the tumour should be removed in one whole piece and not piecemeal to prevent spillage of the tumor cells. A facial nerve monitor is recommenderd to prevent damage to the facial nerve.

The scar is usually placed in front of the ear and is closed using fine sutures resulting in a faint line with time.
