A type of Bariatric Surgery used to treat obesity by aiding dramatic weight loss. It is also known to help lessen the problems associated with asthma, high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes and general heart problems. Also known as a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, a lap-band, A band, or LAGB, an inflatable silicone device is fitted around the top portion of the stomach to create a smaller stomach pouch, intended to decrease the amount of food consumed in one go. The sensation of feeling ‘full’ when eating occurs much quicker due to the upper pouch filling up quicker, then the food will slowly move into the larger lower section. Considered the least invasive of the Bariatric Surgeries as it can be performed and reversed via key-hole surgery.
Also referred to as obesity surgery, metabolic surgery or weight loss surgery, Bariatric procedures are designed to restrict the amount of food the body can absorb.

General anesthesia is used in this technique and this is a laparoscopic procedure. A small incision, measuring 1 to 1.25cm is made close to your belly button. Carbon Dioxide gas is introduced into the abdominal cavity through this cut to produce the workspace and a laparoscope is inserted into the cavity through this hole. The camera will give clear pictures of the inside structures. Small surgical instruments linked with the laparoscope are used to make some other small cuts in the abdomen. Using these instruments, the surgeon produces a small gastric tunnel behind your stomach and inserts the gastric band and locks it in front of the stomach. The internal incisions are stitched and the laparoscope along with carbon dioxide is removed from the abdominal cavity and a bandage is applied on the outside incision after it has been stitched. A tube is connected to the band which can be accessed through a port under the abdominal skin. Saline solution is injected into the band through this tube as it is used to alter the size of the band.
As it is a minimally invasive procedure, it takes 30 to 60 minutes in the operation theatre for the procedure to be completed after which the patient is discharged on the same day when the effects of the anesthesia wear off. You should plan to stay in Thailand for at least 14 days after your surgery, this will allow for the initial recovery and follow-up check-ups.
Gastric banding is a minimally invasive procedure taking less time to recover. You cannot have any solid food for at least 6 weeks during the recovery. You can continue with your normal activities after 2 days. Still, you will have to take a week off work.
An average person loses 0.5 to 1kg weight per week after the gastric banding procedure. You can lose 22kgs to 45kgs in one year with this type of surgery. On average, you can lose 40% to 60% of your excess weight. In some cases, the abdominal port shifts. For this, follow up surgeries are required and about 15% of the patients will require follow up surgery.
Consider the following points to take care of yourself at home after being discharged from the hospital:
Before going through a gastric band surgery, you will be extremely unhealthy and within the 'obese' range, based on your BMI score. Obesity drastically decreases your physical activity and can even affect your aesthetic appearance. The worst part of obesity is, it has other associated problems. After you go for the surgery and the rapid weight loss that follows, all of these problems are reduced. You are no longer under the extreme risk of heart disease and other issues and your ability to partake in physical activities increases whilst your figure slims.
Alternative Bariatric Procedures:
1. Gastric Bypass - The stomach is divided into two parts; a small upper pouch and a large lower ‘remnant’ pouch. The small intestine is rearranged accordingly, bypassing the large pouch and thus significantly reducing the volume of the stomach.
2. Gastric Sleeve - The stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original capacity by surgically removing a large portion of it, resulting in a sleeve or tube-like structure. This process is irreversible.
3. Gastric Balloon - An inflatable device is temporarily inserted into the stomach via endoscopic placement. The balloon obstructs a sizable area of the stomach, thus reducing the amount of food it can contain at any one time.
