I understand why this hospital is considered the best in Thailand. Traveled all the way from Australia to get my treatment here after I heard good things about it. Superb staff, very friendly, attentive, and helpful. Many of the staff can speak English, so communication is not a problem. I asked many questions and told them my concerns, and they answered patiently and put me at ease. Had to stay for several days after my treatment. The room was super clean, well-designed, and definitely made me feel comfortable. The nurses checked on me every hour or so, and the food was surprisingly great. Though having to stay in a hospital is never a good experience, I would say my time in Bumrungrad was a pleasant one. A bit pricey when compared to other hospitals around the area, but with the quality service and high-level care offered, it was all worth it.

What you need to know about Intravenous Thrombolytic Therapy in Thailand

Intravenous Thrombolytic Therapy (IVT), is a medical procedure that is widely used in Thailand and other Asian countries to remove blood clots, reduce the risk of stroke, treat heart attack, and treat pulmonary embolism. This procedure has been used in Thailand for many years and is one of the most reliable and effective treatments for heart and lung diseases. To understand the potential benefits of IVT, it is important to understand what it is and how it works. This procedure involves using drugs to dissolve, or thrombolysis, certain types of clots. When a clot is dissolved, it can no longer obstruct the pathway of oxygenated or deoxygenated blood. As a result, both the amount of nutrients and oxygen in the blood increases, allowing for improved circulation and a decrease in the chance of organ damage. While this is considered a lifesaving treatment, there are some risks it may pose to patients. As with any medical procedure, there are risks and benefits associated with IVT. As this procedure involves the use of drugs, there is a risk of anaphylactic shock and other allergic reactions. Additionally, there is an increased risk of bleeding due to the thrombolysis. To ensure safety, it is important to carefully weigh the risks and benefits with your doctor and make an informed decision. In terms of the benefits, IVT offers a much more effective and shorter recovery time compared to more invasive treatments. In addition, this procedure can be performed in a non-invasive hospital setting, and requires no surgery. This makes it highly advantageous in terms of cost-effectiveness and convenience. Overall, IVT is an important procedure for treating conditions that involve blood clots and other thromboembolic disorders. The safety and efficacy of this procedure are well established, and it provides a safe, comfortable and cost-effective solution for treating these conditions.

What are the indications for IV thrombolytic therapy in Thailand?

Indications for Intravenous (IV) Thrombolytic therapy in Thailand include acute stroke symptoms, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is recommended where the patient is under 8 hours window time period and the medical team has identified a treatable blockage. The cost of therapy depends on the patient's body weight, medical condition and other factors. The average cost may range from 16,000 to 33,000 Thai Baht (513 to 1,132 USD). It is important for the patient to understand benefits and risks of the treatment before undergoing the thrombolytic therapy.

What is the experience of Thai physicians with the thrombolytic therapy?

Thai physicians have a good experience with thrombolytic therapy, which involves the administration of drugs to dissolve clots in the blood vessels and restore blood flow leading to better patient outcomes. In Thailand, thrombolytic therapy is predominantly used in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke and is particularly advantageous when given within 3-4.5 hours of onset of symptoms. Thrombolytic therapy is becoming increasingly accessible to a larger proportion of the population in the country with an estimate of around 1,200-1,500 thrombolysis treatments per year (approximately USD 30,000-37,500). The outcomes have been excellent with acceptable safety profiles and significant improvement in neurological status.

What are the safety protocols for the intravenous thrombolytic therapy?

Intravenous thrombolytic therapy is a medical procedure used to break up blood clots trapped in a blood vessel. For safety purposes, all medical staff should be trained to prevent any risks associated with this procedure. Additionally, the patient should be closely monitored during the procedure, including regular blood pressure and pulse checks. The clot busting agent used for thrombolytic therapy often requires a price of around $1,000 (approx. USD 700) for 90-120 minutes of treatment. As a precautionary measure, the patient should also be provided with anti-coagulant therapies to prevent any further clot formations. Furthermore, it is advised to keep the patient in the hospital overnight, in case any emergencies arise. To ensure maximum safety and efficacy, the patient should also be closely monitored for the following 48-72 hours after the procedure.

Are there any long-term side effects to consider when utilizing thrombolytic therapy?

Thrombolytic therapy can be a powerful approach to treating clots, but there can be long-term side effects. Some of the risks include bleeding or allergic reactions to the thrombolytic drug, blood clot dislodgement which can lead to acute organ damage, and increased risk of stroke. The procedure usually costs between USD 400 - 650 (approx. Rs. 30,000 - 47,500), and any fees associated with follow-up care will add to the total. Patients should consider the risks and benefits of this procedure to ensure the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Overall, it is important for everyone to weigh the pros and cons of any procedure before deciding to commit to it.

What is the cost of intravenous thrombolytic therapy in Thailand?

Intravenous thrombolytic therapy or ‘clot busting therapy’ is commonly used in the treatment of ischemia, stroke and pulmonary embolism. In Thailand, the average cost of intravenous thrombolytic therapy is 30,000 ฿ (approx. USD 976). The cost can vary depending upon the medical issue, the grade and location of the clinic and the individual hospital. There could also be additional costs involved in providing ancillary services such as laboratory work, imaging, intensive care support, or other treatments. It is best to discuss various cost options with the physician and ask about any fees that may apply.

What pre-treatment tests are required prior to intravenous thrombolytic therapy?

Prior to intravenous thrombolytic therapy, a pre-treatment assessment is essential to ensure the best outcome. This includes a full medical history and physical examination. Laboratory tests, including blood tests (such as CBC, coagulation tests, lipid panel) and imaging tests (X-ray or CT scan of chest/abdomen) may also be recommended. The approximate cost for laboratory tests is (INR 2000-3000 (£25-38/approx. USD33-50)). Imaging tests may cost between (INR 5000-8000 (£63-100/approx. USD83-132)). The cost of these tests may vary depending on a patient's individual requirements. It is important to understand that pre-treatment assessments play a vital role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of intravenous thrombolytic therapy.
