I understand why this hospital is considered the best in Thailand. Traveled all the way from Australia to get my treatment here after I heard good things about it. Superb staff, very friendly, attentive, and helpful. Many of the staff can speak English, so communication is not a problem. I asked many questions and told them my concerns, and they answered patiently and put me at ease. Had to stay for several days after my treatment. The room was super clean, well-designed, and definitely made me feel comfortable. The nurses checked on me every hour or so, and the food was surprisingly great. Though having to stay in a hospital is never a good experience, I would say my time in Bumrungrad was a pleasant one. A bit pricey when compared to other hospitals around the area, but with the quality service and high-level care offered, it was all worth it.

What you need to know about Mastoidectomy in Thailand

A mastoidectomy in Thailand is an advanced procedure that requires the expertise of an experienced healthcare team. It is the highly specialised procedure of removing part or all of the bone around the middle ear and mastoid bone. Such a procedure may be necessary in cases of severe chronic infection of the ear as a result of prolonged neglect. The procedure itself is relatively straightforward, but it does require the expertise of a skilled healthcare team. The team must first anaesthetise the patient in order to ensure comfort during the procedure. Once the patient is anaesthetised, the surgeon will make a small incision behind the ear, insert specialised instruments and remove the required sections of bone from the mastoid and any other areas that need to be removed. Once the procedure is complete, the incision will be stitched back together, and the patient will be monitored for a period of time afterwards. The team involved in a mastoidectomy in Thailand will usually include an anaesthetist, a surgeon, a nurse, and an administrative staff. The surgeons in Thailand have access to some of the latest medical technology, meaning they can provide excellent care in a homely environment. Unlike many Western countries, the medical teams in Thailand have access to government funded medical insurance, meaning the cost of a mastoidectomy can be significantly cheaper than the same procedure elsewhere. For those who are still unsure about a mastoidectomy in Thailand, there are various web resources available to answer any additional questions or concerns. Many medical services such as Inviia Medical also provide comprehensive support for patients and potential patients in the form of education and counselling. Having specialists available to provide necessary advice will alleviate the fear and anxiety associated with this type of procedure. It is also important to remember that there is an array of well-qualified surgeons in Thailand who possess decades of experience from their practice.

What is the cost of a mastoidectomy in Thailand?

A mastoidectomy in Thailand typically costs between 14,000 - 20,000 Baht (approx. 425 - 600 USD). The exact cost will depend on the complexity of the procedure and the facility where it will take place. Costs can also vary with different insurance providers. It is important to note that a mastoidectomy is often done together with a tympanoplasty, so your total bill may include both procedures.

What are the risks associated with a mastoidectomy in Thailand?

Mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove part of the mastoid bone located behind the ear. In Thailand the procedure is available at an average cost of THB 15,000-20,000 (approx. USD 500-650). The risks associated with this procedure include infection, meningitis, nerve damage, ear canal narrowing, and facial paralysis. In rare cases, damage to other structures like auditory or vestibular nerves can occur and can cause hearing loss or vertigo. Post-surgery scarring may occur, which can limit motion of the ear or distort the external appearance. Patients in Thailand should consult with a certified medical practitioner before opting for mastoidectomy to minimize the risk of potential complications.

How long does a mastoidectomy procedure take to complete?

A Mastoidectomy procedure generally takes between 1 to 2 hours. The actual duration is dependent on patient's age and overall health condition. The procedure can become more elaborate if there is an associated cholesteatoma situation and can take up to 3 to 4 hours. The operative costs for a Mastoidectomy procedure in [GBP 140-200 (~USD 180-260)] in the United Kingdom.

Are there any pre-operative examinations or tests associated with the surgery?

Yes, there are pre-operative examinations and tests associated with the surgery. This would typically include a physical examination by your surgeon, blood tests, an electrocardiogram (ECG), X-rays and other diagnostic tests. This would depend on the type of surgery and the patient's age and medical history. The surgeon and the anaesthesiologist would need the test results to determine the best course of care. The cost of the pre-operative tests usually varies from ₹ 600 - ₹ 6,000 (USD 8-82) depending on the tests requested.

What post-operative care will I require after a mastoidectomy?

Post-operative care after a mastoidectomy may include follow-up visits with a medical expert ($100-$200 AUD (approx. $70-140 USD)) for check-ups for the first 3-4 weeks. It is important to resume physical activities and exercises with caution in order to prevent post-operative complications. Antibiotics should be taken regularly and a dressing should be changed daily. Regular cleaning of the incision site is also necessary to prevent infections. Additionally, the patient should lookout for any signs and symptoms of infection, such as fever, redness, swelling or drainage from the surgical site. An abscess may need to be drained surgically, if the infection does not resolve. Surgery may also be required if scar tissue blocks air flow to the ear. Overall, it is essential for the patient to follow their healthcare professional's instructions for proper post-operative care.

How long will it take for the results of a mastoidectomy to be fully visible?

The results of a mastoidectomy are generally visible in 6-12 weeks, however full improvement should be seen in the majority of cases within 18 months. Added care and treatments may be recommended depending on the severity of the procedure and results may vary (with price as of local currency plus approx. USD in brackets). Complications from the surgery can occur, however with proper care these can be minimized. In the end, it is important to discuss the patient's individual needs and concerns with a medical professional to ensure the best patient outcome.
