What you need to know about Nuchal Translucency Scan NT scan in Thailand

Nuchal Translucency Scan (NT scan) is an instrumentally based prenatal diagnostic test that measures the thickness of an unborn baby’s nuchal fold. It is performed between 11 and 13 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. The NT scan is available at all leading hospitals in Thailand and is often combined with screening for Down’s Syndrome (or other similar Trisomies) in the first trimester. It is one of the most significant medical advancements in the field of prenatal care, providing vital health care information to mothers and their partners. The NT scan is a safe, non-invasive procedure that can provide vital information about your unborn baby. This procedure will help uncover any abnormalities in the development of your baby’s neck, any chromosomal abnormalities and any underlying disease in the mother. All the information is collected through a painless ultrasound scan and transmitted to a specialized Database. The Database will analyze and compare the NT scan data with the fetal measurements and based on this generate reports with results. Some of the associated risks of the NT scan are very minimal, and include a mild discomfort during the scan and a small chance of miscarriage. The accuracy of the NT scan depends on the quality of the scan, the expertise and experience of the radiologist performing the scan and the quality of the Report generated. The results are presented to the parents either at their next appointment or via a telephone call, with a detailed debriefing by a clinical advisor providing more information on the findings, implications, recommendations and lifestyle matters. The NT scan is an invaluable prenatal diagnostic test that can provide individuals in Thailand, who are expecting a baby, with vital health care information about their baby before he/she is born. It is an invaluable tool in creating the most precious moments for parents and their partners, with the potential of detecting any potential health issues before the baby is born.

What is a Nuchal Translucency Scan?

A Nuchal Translucency Scan (NTS) is an ultrasound scan traditionally performed between 11-13 weeks of pregnancy, which assesses the risk of your baby having certain chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down's Syndrome. The scan measures the thickness of a fold of fluid (the nuchal translucency) at the back of your baby’s neck and the result of this is combined with the results of a biochemical blood test to assess your baby's risk. The scan does not give a definitive diagnosis; instead, it can provide an indication of the risk that your baby may have a chromosomal abnormality. If the risk is increased, you will be offered a further diagnostic test, such as amniocentesis to definitively diagnose such conditions. This scan usually costs (chf250 - approx. USD 270).

Are there any age or weight restrictions for an NT scan in Thailand?

A Non-Invasive prenatal test (NIPT) scan is typically available for pregnant women of Thailand between the ages of 10 and 45. Depending on the hospital or clinic, weight restrictions may apply and the scan may not be suitable for women who are overweight. The cost of the scan is typically ฿22,000 to ฿30,000 (USD$650 to 900). The scan aims to detect chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and other medical conditions. If the scan results are positive for any of these conditions, a follow up diagnostic test is strongly advised. The accuracy rate for a Non-Invasive prenatal test (NIPT) scan is approximately 99%.

What are the risks associated with an NT scan?

Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan is a screening test used to check for certain genetic abnormalities during the early stages of pregnancy. It is usually performed between 11-14 weeks of pregnancy and the risks associated with it are very low. The test involves a small dose of ultrasound which has absolutely no affects on both the mother and the fetus. The only risk associated with NT scan is some mild discomfort such as slight cramping caused by the pressure applied during the scan. Furthermore, there is a slight risk of an early miscarriage, either due to the scan itself or the medical condition which the scan is screening for. Though these risks are minimal and very rare, it is advised that the patient consults with her obstetrician prior to taking the scan. The cost of NT scan may vary from country to country, but on an average an NT scan can cost approximately €220 (approx. USD 240). The cost does not include the medical advice of a doctor nor the blood test required for further clearance.

What kind of information can I expect to receive from the NT scan in Thailand?

The NT Scan in Thailand is a routine diagnostic test typically conducted between 11 to 13 weeks of gestation. The NT Scan provides detailed information regarding a number of features of the fetus including the neck thickness which is associated with a possible chromosomal abnormality. The scan also helps detect structural anomalies such as spina bifida. In combination with the blood tests, the NT Scan has a very high accuracy in detecting major birth defects and can predict the likelihood of the fetus being affected by Down Syndrome. The cost of the NT Scan usually ranges from 3,000-4,000 Baht (approx.USD 100-140).

How can I prepare for an NT scan in Thailand?

It is a good idea to prepare for an NT scan in Thailand prior to the scan. It is important to have all the specified medical tests completed before the scan and to have the associated medical reports. Patients should also prepare to pay a fee of approximately ฿2000 (~$65 USD) for the scan. Additionally they should bring a copy of the relevant medical papers and their medical history to the scan. It is also recommended that patients wear comfortable clothing and to abstain from eating a few hours before the scan. Finally, it is important to keep in mind that the NT scan is to be performed between 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy.

How much does an NT scan in Thailand cost?

The cost of an NT scan in Thailand may vary based on the location, facility and other costs associated with the scan. An approximate cost is between 2,500 – 4,500 THB (Approx. USD 83 - 146) depending on the chosen clinic. It is important to keep in mind that if you are referred to an external laboratory for further tests, additional fees may apply. It is important for expectant parents to take into account all fees and make the best decisions for their budget.
