Bumrungrad International Hospital

Glinda Deblois, 22 November 2020

I understand why this hospital is considered the best in Thailand. Traveled all the way from Australia to get my treatment here after I heard good things about it. Superb staff, very friendly, attentive, and helpful. Many of the staff can speak English, so communication is not a problem. I asked many questions and told them my concerns, and they answered patiently and put me at ease. Had to stay for several days after my treatment. The room was super clean, well-designed, and definitely made me feel comfortable. The nurses checked on me every hour or so, and the food was surprisingly great. Though having to stay in a hospital is never a good experience, I would say my time in Bumrungrad was a pleasant one. A bit pricey when compared to other hospitals around the area, but with the quality service and high-level care offered, it was all worth it.

What you need to know about Implantable Contact Lens ICL in Thailand

Implantable Contact Lens ICL known as Phakic Intraocular Lens (PIOL) is a surgical procedure developed to help people with a high degree of refractive errors in the eye, such as long-sightedness, short-sightedness, and astigmatism. The procedure for ICL in Thailand involves the insertion of an artificial lens through a small incision in the eye, which is then positioned in front of the eye’s natural lens. This has become an increasingly popular option for people who do not want to rely on traditional eyeglasses or contact lenses. The benefits of ICL in Thailand include fast results and greater stability in the eye. Since the lens is implanted inside the eye, it does not need to be replaced after the initial procedure. Moreover, the results achieved by ICL are usually much better than those achieved with contact lenses or glasses. This procedure also has the potential to reduce the risk of developing certain eye diseases, such as cataracts, myopia, and glaucoma. However, there are certain risks associated with ICL in Thailand that must be considered before undergoing the procedure. It is important to discuss the risks with a qualified ophthalmologist and go through a pre-operative evaluation in order to assess the suitability of the procedure. Some of the risks of ICL include a short term suggestion of vision, halo effects, glare, and reduced contrast sensitivity. Furthermore, there is a small risk of infection and/or pain. Overall, Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) is an attractive option for people with a high degree of refractive errors. The procedure has a high success rate, provides stable results, and has the potential to reduce the risk of developing eye diseases. However, it is important to make sure that you get all the information about the procedure and associated risks in order for you to make an informed decision.

What is the cost of an ICL in Thailand?

The cost of an ICL (Implantable Contact Lens) in Thailand generally ranges from 70,000 - 80,000 ฿ (Approx. 2,400 - 2,680 USD). This cost covers lens evaluation, preoperative care and preparation, materials, and postoperative care and follow up visits. It is important to keep in mind that the individual cost may vary depending on the patient's medical history, the complexity of their spectacle prescription, and the preference of the surgeon.

What are the risks associated with ICL implants?

Implantable contact lenses, also known as ICL implants, involve a surgical procedure and have associated risks. These can include infection, swelling, glare and hazy vision, blurred vision, short-term vision loss, floaters, irritation, and decreased night vision. There may also be a slight risk of retinal detachment, inflammation in the eye, increased eye pressure, and corneal changes. In rare cases, implant rejection and other infections may also occur. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of this procedure with your eye doctor prior to surgery, and to ask about the cost (which is usually around €2,000 to €3,000 [approximately $2,323 to $3,485 USD]).

What type of ICL does Thailand offer?

Thailand offers implantable contact lenses (ICLs) as a vision correction option. Lens implants are used to improve sight in cases of nearsightedness (myopia) where the cornea shape is irregular and glasses and contact lenses provide inadequate results. An ICL is an artificial lens implanted into the eye. It refocuses the light entering the eye, improving clarity and sharpness of vision. The cost of ICLs treatment in Thailand is typically around ฿48,000 (approx. USD1,500) per eye, including preoperative and postoperative care. The cost may vary as there are various factors that affects the pricing of ICLs in Thailand.

Are ICL implants successful in improving vision?

ICL implants are a successful and reliable method of improving vision. The technique provides permanent improvement in vision with no risk of rejection. It does not require a corneal flap like in LASIK and is shown to be predictable and precise. Patients can commonly achieve a vision of 20/20 or better. The total cost of ICL implantation typically ranges from INR 40,000 - 70,000 (USD 550 - 980 approx.), including pre-operative assessments, ICL implant, and post-operative care. However, cost can vary depending on the type of prescription and the specific complexity involved in the procedure.

What recovery time is needed after ICL implants?

ICL implants are a type of vision correction surgery. The recovery time needed is usually between one to three weeks although most patients notice an improved vision within 24 hours of the surgery. During this period, patients may experience mild discomfort and tearing. It is important to follow the post-operative care instructions and take the recommended medications to ensure the safest recovery. Depending on the complexity of the surgery, the price for ICL implants is typically around X (Approx. USD Y).

How long does an ICL last once implanted?

An intracorneal lens (ICL), once implanted, generally has a projected lifespan of up to 10 years. The efficacy of a lens may depend on a number of factors including the patient's eye conditions. ICLs are highly durable lenses and are usually safe, with very low risks of infection. ICLs typically cost around $800 - $2,000 (USD $580 - $1,450 approximately), depending upon the type and number of lenses. In comparison to laser surgery, the ICL is far less invasive and recovery time is also much shorter.
