Glinda Deblois, 22 November 2020

I understand why this hospital is considered the best in Thailand. Traveled all the way from Australia to get my treatment here after I heard good things about it. Superb staff, very friendly, attentive, and helpful. Many of the staff can speak English, so communication is not a problem. I asked many questions and told them my concerns, and they answered patiently and put me at ease. Had to stay for several days after my treatment. The room was super clean, well-designed, and definitely made me feel comfortable. The nurses checked on me every hour or so, and the food was surprisingly great. Though having to stay in a hospital is never a good experience, I would say my time in Bumrungrad was a pleasant one. A bit pricey when compared to other hospitals around the area, but with the quality service and high-level care offered, it was all worth it.

What you need to know about Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease GERD Treatment in Thailand

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as GERD, is one of the most common medical conditions across the world. Thailand is no exception, with many people suffering from difficulty in digesting and swallowing food, as a result of GERD. Fortunately, there are excellent treatment options available in Thailand to help those suffering from GERD. GERD treatment in Thailand comes in two forms: medication and surgery. Medication is the most common form of treatment throughout the world, including Thailand. As with any medication, the effectiveness will depend on the individual case and symptoms, and those with more severe symptoms may require additional medication. Antacids and proton pump inhibitors are common types of medication provided in Thailand to treat GERD. For those who do not respond to medication, surgical options are available. The most common type of GERD surgery offered in Thailand is the Nissen Fundoplication. This procedure is designed to decrease the acid reflux that causes GERD by increasing the pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This is done by wrapping the top portion of the stomach around the lower portion of the esophagus, and if done correctly, should offer successful, long-term relief from GERD. When considering GERD treatment in Thailand, it is important to remember that all the options available come with risks, and so must be carefully evaluated on a case-by-case basis. As such, it is highly recommended that anyone suffering from GERD should seek the advice of an experienced medical expert, such as a gastroenterologist. This professional will be able to advise on the best course of action in order to provide effective and safe relief from GERD. At the end of the day, GERD treatment in Thailand offers excellent, cost-effective options for those suffering from digestive issues and difficulty swallowing food.

What are the most common treatments for GERD in Thailand?

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is quite common amongst people based in Thailand. Though it may be a nuisance, luckily it is treatable with a few options available. An acid reflux relief program and medications with natural remedies such as throat lozenges, probiotics and fennel tea can all be used to aid in managing GERD. Most medications cost around 100-140 Baht (3.15-4.50 USD) per medication, with an additional cost for the acid reflux program. For more serious cases, surgery may be needed to provide long-term relief and if so, the costs for this can range from 20,000 Baht (631 USD) to 80,000 Baht (2,524 USD). With continuation the treatments to combat GERD can be quite successful and it's possible to enjoy further improvements in well being overall. Other lifestyle choices such as eating smaller meals and avoiding alcohol, caffeine and tobacco products can help continuous relief over the long-term.

What lifestyle changes should I make to help manage my GERD symptoms?

Staying away from smoking and cutting back on alcohol intake can be effective in managing GERD symptoms. Additionally, eating smaller meals more frequently can be beneficial in reducing the risk of inflammation and heartburn. Some lifestyle modifications have been found to be useful in helping with GERD. Regular exercising can help strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter and lead to improved gut situation. Avoiding the consumption of certain food items like processed and fried foods, acidic items, chocoaltes, mint, caffeine and carbonate drinks can also help reduce the severity of GERD symptoms. It is advised to keep a head up posture while sleeping, by using a wedge-shaped pillow (approximately $25 - $50 generally in most places) for providing elevation for the head and chest area to keep acid from backing up in the stomach.

Are there any specialized GERD clinics in Thailand?

Yes, there are specialized GERD clinics in Thailand that offer medical servicesto treat GERD at the highest level. At these clinics, clients can benefit from a range of diagnosis tests and procedures to treat the symptoms of GERD. Additionally, the physicians at these clinics offer preventive care, including lifestyle modifications and nutritional counseling. Appointment fees range from 3,000 Baht (approx. USD 98) to 5,000 Baht (approx. USD 165) per session, depending on the exact requirements of the patient. Clinics offering these specialized services are available in major cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Phuket.

Is there any over-the-counter GERD medication available in Thailand?

Yes, there are many over-the-counter GERD medications available in Thailand. Antacids, such as Gaviscon, are the most commonly used and can be found at most pharmacists. H2-receptor antagonists, such as Zantac, can also be purchased without a prescription and may offer relief for longer periods. Prices for these medicines generally range from ฿10-฿100 (approx. USD 0.30-USD 3.00). Proton pump inhibitors are also available without a prescription and may be more effective for long-term relief. Prices for these tend to range from ฿100-฿400 (approx USD 3.00-USD 12.00).

What are the common surgical options for treating GERD in Thailand?

Surgery is an effective and recommended option for treating chronic Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) in Thailand. Common options include: Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) Fundoplication Surgery, which reforms the muscular valve at the top of the stomach. This reconstructs the barrier preventing back flow of stomach acid into the esophagus, providing long-term relief. It costs about ฿100,000 (approx. USD 3,000). The second option, Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF), is less invasive, more cost-effective and requires very little post-surgery recovery time. It involves the same results as GORD Fundoplication surgery in less than one hour, for a cost of ฿75,000 (approx. USD 2,250). In addition, Endoscopic Sclerotherapy is a third option which involves injecting acid-neutralising medications directly into the lower oesophageal sphincter to imped the acid’s access. It costs ฿50,000 (approx. USD1,500). Each of these treatments offer patients long-term relief from GERD with minimal recovery time. However, it’s important to speak to a doctor to determine the best treatment based on a patient’s individual condition.

Are there any alternative treatments available in Thailand for GERD?

In Thailand, for those suffering from Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), endoscopic treatments offer great management of the condition without the need for drugs or surgery. Endocsopic fundoplication and endoscopic suturing are two common surgical treatments. Fundoplication typically costs around 10,000THB (approx. $325 USD); meanwhile, endoscopic suturing typically costs around 30,000THB (approx. $970 USD). For those wanting to explore the traditional therapies, Chinese herbal medicine has regained acceptance as a viable option in Thailand and has been effective in relieving GERD symptoms. Acupuncture too, has been found to provide symptomatic relief. Both of these treatments typically cost around 1,500-2,000THB per session (approx. $50 -$65 USD). In conclusion, a variety of treatments are available in Thailand for GERD sufferers, ranging from endoscopic treatments to traditional therapies. Each of these treatments are associated with different costs and may offer different benefits to individuals, therefore it is best to discuss the options with a wide variety of specialists before deciding on the best course of action.
