Liposuction clinics in Bangkok

MyMediTravel lists 32 clinics offering liposuction in Bangkok, and 17 of them publish a starting price. The cheapest is $895 at Veera Clinic in Din Daeng, the median is $1,667, and 15 of the 17 sit between $834 and $2,501. The two above that, DBN at $5,002 and Thonburi Bamrungmuang Hospital at $6,947, are quoting for something bigger than the rest, which is the point to understand before you compare any two figures: liposuction is priced per area, and a "from" price is almost always one area, under local anaesthetic, at a clinic rather than a hospital.

What a "from" price for liposuction actually covers

Clinics in Bangkok quote liposuction by treatment area: abdomen, flanks, inner thighs, outer thighs, arms, chin and so on. The published figure is the smallest job they do. A typical patient wants two or three areas, and a full "360" of the midsection (abdomen, flanks, lower back) is priced as three or four. So a $1,000 starting price is more realistically $2,500 to $3,500 for what most people have in mind. Technique moves the number too: standard tumescent liposuction is the base price, VASER (ultrasound-assisted) or laser-assisted lipo adds a premium at most clinics, and anything done under general anaesthetic in a hospital adds the anaesthetist and a night's stay. Ask for the quote by area, with technique and anaesthetic stated, and the arithmetic becomes simple.

Read it in two groups. Clinics, under $1,700: Veera, MasterWork, Interplast, Kichona and BellaMode. BellaMode in Watthana is the most-reviewed on the page, 38 reviews at 4.9, and lists 13 doctors. Hospitals, $1,389 up: Bangpakok 9 and Kamol both start at $1,389, then B.Care, Asia Cosmetic, Bangkok Hospital Bangkok at $1,945 and Sikarin at $2,501. Six of the hospitals hold JCI accreditation (Bangpakok 9, Kamol, Bangkok Hospital, Sikarin, Thonburi Bamrungmuang, and Bumrungrad, which quotes per case). A hospital start price around $1,400 to $2,500 with an anaesthetist on site is, for multi-area liposuction, often the better comparison than a $1,000 clinic price that assumes local anaesthetic.

Who has the surgical bench

Nirunda International Aesthetic Clinic in Khlong Toei lists 80 doctors, more than anyone else on the page; Sikarin Hospital lists 42, Bangkok Hospital Bangkok 25, DGB Clinic 18, Natchaya Clinic 14, Bumrungrad and BellaMode 13 each. Several of the cheapest clinics are single-surgeon practices: Veera Clinic lists Dr. Penlada Krutkosa, Interplast lists Dr. Theerapong Poonyakariyagorn. Neither model is wrong for one or two areas. For three or more areas in one session, which is a longer operation with more fluid shifted, a hospital with an anaesthetist and an overnight bed is the safer place to be, and the listings that name a surgical team tell you who would be in the room.

Where they are

Watthana, the Sukhumvit and Thonglor district, has five of the 32 clinics including Bumrungrad, BellaMode and Preecha Aesthetic Institute; it is also where most visitors stay, so a check-up is a short taxi ride. Bangkok Hospital and Bujeong Clinic are in Huai Khwang on Rama 9, near the MRT. Sikarin is out in Bang Na by the expressway, Bangpakok 9 is south of the river in Chom Thong, and B.Care is in Sai Mai in the far north of the city. None of these is far in distance, but Bangkok traffic makes a clinic near your hotel worth a few hundred dollars of difference in price when you will be visiting it three or four times.

How long to stay

Seven to ten days for one or two areas: consultation and blood work, the procedure, a check the next day, and a review around day five to seven before you fly. Multi-area or hospital-based liposuction under general anaesthetic usually means a night in hospital and ten to fourteen days in the country. You will wear a compression garment for several weeks either way, and the clinic will normally supply it; check whether it is in the quote. Swelling hides the result for the first month and the final contour settles over three to six months, so judge before-and-after photos at the six-month point.

What to ask before you pay a deposit

• Which areas does the quoted price cover, and what is the price per additional area?
• Standard tumescent, VASER or laser-assisted, and is the difference in price stated?
• Local or general anaesthetic, and if general, is the anaesthetist and the hospital night included?
• Who is the surgeon, and will they be the one operating?
• Is the compression garment included, and how many follow-up visits are in the price?
