What you need to know about Penile Prosthesis in Switzerland

Penile prosthesis or penile implant surgery is performed as a treatment for men with erectile dysfunction and in some cases to increase the size of the penis (Penis Augmentation). These devices are either malleable (bendable) or inflatable. The simplest type of prosthesis consists of a pair of malleable rods surgically implanted within the erection chambers of the penis, under general anesthetic. With this type of implant the penis is always semi-rigid and merely needs to be lifted or adjusted into the erect position to initiate sex. This type of implant is a good choice for men with spinal cord injuries and/or limited hand strength. Today, many men choose a hydraulic, inflatable prosthesis, which allows them to have an erection when they choose, and it's easier to conceal. It is also more natural.

A penile implant is usually used when there is a clear medical cause for erectile dysfunction and when the problem is unlikely to resolve or improve naturally or with other medical treatments. Sometimes a penile prosthesis is implanted during surgery to reconstruct the penis when scarring has caused erections to curve (Peyronie's disease).

Additional factors to consider:

1. Recovery time: Penile implant surgeries take about an hour and are typically done in an outpatient center. A person can resume sexual intercourse after 6 weeks and will need to take medications to ease pain during the recovery. Mild pain might persist for several weeks. Patients may also need to take antibiotics for one week to prevent infection.

2. Success rate is extremely high, infections after penile implant surgery typically occur in the first few weeks. Early infections can cause swelling of the scrotum, pus build up and fever. Other risks may include an erosion of the implants or a malfunction of the implant which requires it to be repaired or replaced.

3. Patient reviews: Patient and partner satisfaction are high with Penile Prosthesis, along with an expected confidence boost. Feeling and sensitivity is not affected and the patient is still able to ejaculate as normal, therefore the chances of conceiving are not impacted.
