What you need to know about Botox Injections in Thailand

Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections are used to reduce visible lines and wrinkles. Due to the very low concentration used it is, in fact, a very safe cosmetic treatment. The substance, which is produced in laboratories, blocks nerve impulses to the tiny facial muscles, which normally cause lines and wrinkles when they contract. This prevents the muscles from contracting and the skin is smoothed so that lines and wrinkles disappear in the best achievable way. Untreated muscles are not affected, nor are normal facial expressions.

Wrinkles best suited to this treatment are those caused by muscle use, for example, expression wrinkles. Wrinkles between the eyebrows, horizontal wrinkles of the forehead and wrinkles around the eyes can all be treated with Botox injections. It normally only takes a few minutes to administer the anti-wrinkle injections and, as the needles used are very fine, it is not usually painful. It's very important that the person doing the injecting is an expert in facial anatomy, as the benefits of the treatment depend on their skill to treat the correct muscles.

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) can also be treated using Botulinum toxin(Botox).

The length of time that the effects of the injection will last for differs from patient to patient. Initial injections usually last between four to six months. The interval between each treatment thereafter usually increases over time.

If Botox Injections are not suitable for me, what are the options?

  • All Wrinkles which are visible when the face is relaxed, eg: around the mouth and chin, may be best treated with dermal fillers. Fillers are also best suitable for lip enlargement,
  • Lines caused by aging or sun damage will not respond to Botox treatment either, and may be better treated by chemical peels or laser resurfacing (Fraxel Laser).
  • If your wrinkles are too far advanced for Botox injections to work without preventing all movement, then you may be suitable for surgical procedures such as a Facelift.

Additional factors to consider:

1. Recovery time:  The results usually start to be noticed within three to 10 days or even sooner. They tend to last for between 3 and 6 months. As time passes, the muscle activity will gradually return to normal. Additionally, other areas may return to activity over time, depending on the amount injected (filler injections tend to last approximately 6 to 12 months, depending on the amount used).

2. Success rate is extremely high, if you have eyelid drooping after a Botox procedure, it is a good idea to let your doctor know because there is a medicine available to help this condition. Any other difficulties, such as difficulty breathing or rashes, should be reported immediately. To minimize risk, the manufacturers of Botox recommend physicians inject the medication themselves. As with most procedures, the skill of the practitioner is related to how often he or she performs the procedure.

3. Patient reviews:  The vast majority of patients are extremely happy with not only the results of the procedure but with the entire process leading up to and following the Injections.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the most popular tourist areas outside of Bangkok are Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin and Pattaya, all with great yacht chartering opportunities.

Thailand welcomes hundreds of thousands of medical tourists each year, many of which travel for Botox Injections procedures. Medical Tourists travel from all across the globe, particularly from the local SE Asia region, Australia, US, Middle East and an increasing amount are traveling from China. An outstanding private healthcare system combined with a hot tropical climate and competitive prices means that Thailand is now the third most popular destination in the world for medical tourism. The most popular procedures tend to be cosmetic surgery (breast augmentations, gender reassignment surgery and CoolSculpting to name a few), cardiac surgery, orthopedics and urology.
