Everything you'll need to know about Breast Augmentation in Thailand

Why is Thailand popular for Breast Augmentation?

There are numerous reasons behind Thailand's popularity for breast augmentation. Some of the main reasons are as follows:

  • Thailand offers a lower cost of breast augmentation, plus there are package deals that make the procedure even cheaper compared to Western countries.
  • Surgeons in Thailand are highly qualified and have international experience. Many of them study abroad or receive continuous training overseas, so they can acquire new skills and witness different techniques of breast augmentation in places like the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and South Korea. You can be sure to achieve the best result if you choose the right surgeon.
  • World-class hospitals are plentiful around Thailand. These hospitals are equipped with the latest equipment and modern facilities. You will have an excellent experience while staying in one of these hospitals.
  • You can spend your recovery time in a relaxing and beautiful environment. You can have some of the world's most fantastic beach resorts such as Phuket and Koh Samui on your doorstep.

Is Thailand the right destination for me?

Deciding to get a breast augmentation, especially in a foreign country, is not something to take lightly. You should think carefully about your expectations and the possible risks of the procedure. Breast augmentation in Thailand is the right choice for you if you have one or more of the following conditions:

  • You are looking for improvement in your appearance, not perfection, and you have realistic expectations.
  • You are in good physical health. This means that you have no untreated cancer, active infections, or other serious illnesses. If you have any medical issues, make sure to discuss them with your doctor first so that they can help you decide whether you are an ideal candidate for breast augmentation.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You are in a healthy frame of mind when you decide on your surgery.
  • It is preferable that you do not consume significant amounts of alcohol or smoke.
  • Your breasts are flattened, sagging, elongated, asymmetrical, or lacking adequate volume or cleavage.
  • You are not satisfied with your breast as it loses shape and volume after pregnancy, significant weight loss, or aging.
  • Your breasts are asymmetrical, meaning one breast is much smaller than the other.
  • You understand the rewards and the risks.
  • You understand that breast augmentation should be done for yourself, not because someone else wants you to.
  • You should be at least 18 years old for saline implants or 22 years old for silicone implants.

How do I prepare for Breast Augmentation Surgery in Thailand?

Before your breast augmentation, you will have to consult with your plastic surgeon about your preference of feel, size, and appearance of your breasts. Your surgeon will describe specific types of implants, surgical techniques, as well as a list of instructions of what you have to do before surgery. This consultation may be done virtually or in-person, depending on the hospital or clinic you choose.

It is crucial that you follow the instructions to avoid complications. Although every surgeon in Thailand may have different preoperative instructions, in general, the instructions are as follow:

  • If you are a smoker, stop smoking at least two weeks before and after surgery. Smoking increases the risk of complications since chemicals in smoke act as free radicals, interfering with your healing process.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages one week before your breast augmentation.
  • Do not eat or drink anything at least six hours before your breast augmentation.
  • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, herbal supplements, and birth control pills.

Your surgeon or medical team will also tell you what to bring to Thailand with you for your breast augmentation during the initial consultation.

When you arrive at the hospital or clinic in Thailand for your breast augmentation, you will have to undergo several preoperative tests, including mammography and breast ultrasound, ECG, as well as blood tests to detect hepatitis, HIV, and syphilis. In some cases, your surgeon may ask you to do the test at home and brought the results to Thailand.

Which type of breast implants do hospitals and clinics in Thailand offer?

Breast Implant Types

You have a lot of choices when it comes to breast implants in Thailand, which help you customize your new appearance. Here are some options of breast implants available in the Land of Smiles:

Filling type

  • Silicone gel-filled implants – this type of implant is made up of a silicone outer shell filled with silicone gel – a thick fluid that mimics the feel of human fat. It is the most popular filling type of implants since it looks and feels more like natural breast tissue. If a silicone implant leaks, the gel usually remain within the shell or escape into the breast implant pocket. The implant may or may not collapse.
  • Saline implants – saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater. This solution is held inside an elastomer silicone shell. This type of implant is empty when inserted, then filled once they are in place. They can be filled with various amounts of saline solution, which affects the shape, firmness, and feel of the breast. If a saline implant leaks, your body will absorb and expel the solution naturally.
  • Gummy bear breast implants – gummy bear implants are essentially similar to silicone gel implants; they consist of a silicone shell and a silicone gel filling. However, gummy bear implants are known to retain their shape better than other types of implants because the gel is thicker. These implants are also firmer and softer to the touch than other types of implants.

Shape

  • Round breast implants – this type of implant can be filled with either saline or silicone. They are the more popular choice for breast augmentation as they tend to make the breast appear fuller than other shapes of implants. Although all shapes of implants add volume to the breast, round implants add volume both in the lower part of the breast and higher up on the chest, which does not naturally have much projection without implants.
  • Anatomical teardrop breast implants - just like a round breast implant, anatomical teardrop breast implants may be filled with either saline or silicone. It may also be filled with highly cohesive silicone gel (or gummy bear implants). This shape of implant offers less volume up top and more at the base, which is more similar to the natural breast. It is ideal for women with petite builds since they allow for a more natural-looking shape and projection level without increasing the volume.

Texture

  • Textured breast implants – textured breast implants are less likely to move around inside of the breast and change in position because they stick to the implant by developing scar tissues.
  • Smooth breast implants - smooth breast implants may give more natural movement since they can move with the breast implant pocket.

Size

Breast implants range widely in size, from around 150cc to 800cc or even larger. However, the most common sizes are around 300cc to 500cc. Many people require a different sized breast implant for each breast, which helps them achieve the best symmetry. You need to consider several important factors when choosing the size of breast implants, such as your present and desired cup sizes, weight and body size, and the characteristics of your breast tissue. Your plastic surgeon in Thailand will help you choose the best implant size for you to ensure you achieve the best possible results.

How is Breast Augmentation Surgery carried out in Thailand?

A general anesthetic is normally used during breast augmentation. This type of anesthetic puts you to sleep during the procedure, so you will not feel or be aware of anything. In some cases, local anesthetic may be used instead so that you will be awake but you will not feel any pain.

To insert the breast implant, your surgeon will make an incision in one of the following three areas:

  • In the crease under the breast (inframammary incision) – this is the most common incision area. Your surgeon creates an incision in the natural skin fold on the underside of your breast, called the inframammary fold. Through this incision, the implants can be placed accurately with less blood loss and faster recovery time. This incision leaves a thin scar that is easily concealed within the crease. One of the main advantages of this incision is a broader access point, so your plastic surgeon can precisely place larger implants.
  • In the armpit (transaxillary incision) – this involves the creation of a small incision within the armpit. Your surgeon may use a specialized camera and instruments to ensure optimal placement of the implant. This incision leaves a tiny scar in the armpit, but you will not have any scar on the breast itself.
  • Around the nipple (periareolar incision) – this incision is created around the darkened area around the nipple. This incision is mostly used if the breast augmentation is combined with a mild to a moderate breast lift.

The choice of incision depends on a number of factors, such as your anatomy, how much enlargement is involved, the type of implant, and your preference.

After making the incision, your surgeon will separate the breast tissue from the muscles and connective tissue in your chest. As a result, a pocket either behind or in front the pectoral muscle (the muscles on the anterior chest wall) is created. The implant may be placed behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle (called a subglandular or submammary placement) or under the pectoral muscle (called a submuscular placement).

When the implant is in place, the incision will be closed with stitches and bandaged with surgical tape or skin adhesive.

What should I expect after my surgery?

You should be allowed to leave the hospital or clinic on the same day, as soon as the anesthetic wears off. However, you should plan to stay in Thailand for around 10 to 14 days after your surgery for initial recovery. You may also need to attend several follow-up checkups where your surgeon checks your overall condition. If your surgeon uses sutures that do not dissolve on their own, they may remove the sutures during the follow-up appointment.

During your stay, you may enjoy Thailand's beauty and have an amazing holiday. However, it is best that you opt for relaxation over adventure since there will be restrictions to your activity. You can relax in a beach resort in Phuket or Pattaya or a riverside resort in Bangkok, but remember to discuss it with your surgeon first and always follow your surgeon's instructions. If you want to enjoy a peaceful holiday on a beach, make sure to cover your boobs and use sunscreen. Be careful to keep your incision scars out of the sun to avoid discoloring and avoid swimming or other water activities.

Recovery time

The recovery time of breast augmentation can be different for everyone. The first 3 to 5 days after your surgery may be uncomfortable, but your surgeon will give you instructions and prescribe medications to ease discomfort. You are likely to have some soreness, bruising, and swelling for several weeks following the surgery.

Unless your job is physically demanding, you should be able to return to work within two weeks after breast augmentation. It is important that you avoid upper arm movements for around 1 to 2 weeks and refrain from any physical exercise and heavy lifting for approximately six weeks.

Your surgeon will give you special aftercare instructions. It is vital that you follow everything to avoid complications and achieve the best results. In general, the instructions may include:

  • If the wounds are well-protected by waterproof bandages, you should be able to shower regularly during the first week after surgery. However, taking a bath in a bathtub, swimming, or soaking yourself in a Jacuzzi must be avoided.
  • Wear bras without wires for at least one month after surgery.
  • Avoid activities and exercise that strongly impact the arms or chest must be avoided in the first month after surgery.
  • Drinking alcohol and smoking, as well as eating fermented foods, are strictly prohibited for at least two weeks following your surgery.
  • Your surgeon may teach you the proper way to do an appropriate breast massage. This is important to achieve an excellent breast shape and lower your risk of capsular contractures.

Long term care:

  • Breast mammograms are safe with breast implants. Therefore, make sure to maintain regular screening as scheduled by your doctor.
  • If you have silicone implants, it is recommended that you undergo periodic monitoring (such as via MRI, ultrasound, or mammogram) to screen for ruptures.
  • Remember that future weight fluctuations and pregnancies may affect your results. If you are unhappy with the results over time, you may need a second surgery to correct any changes.
  • Wear a bra with adequate support for your activity level to stop unnecessary sagging. Remember, nothing can stop the normal aging process.

What are the risks of having Breast Augmentation Surgery in Thailand?

Breast augmentation in Thailand has come a long way from where they were two or even one decade ago. Today, the procedure is safe and has high success rates, particularly when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon using the most advanced tools and techniques. Around 98% of women are satisfied with their breast augmentation results. You can read numerous breast augmentation in Thailand reviews and find that many people had a good experience and excellent results.

Of course, breast augmentation in Thailand can be risky, but so is in other countries around the globe. Some of the risks that breast augmentation poses are breast pain, infection, implant rupture or leakage, changes in breast and nipple sensation, fluid accumulation, poor healing of incisions, keloid, breast asymmetry, persisting pain, rippling, bleeding, and scar tissue that can distort the shape of the implant (capsular contracture).

To avoid these complications, make sure to choose a surgeon in Thailand who is licensed and recognized by a competent plastic surgery association and a medical center with accreditations. Whether you have the surgery in Bangkok or Phuket, always check their breast augmentation reviews, before and after pictures, and accreditations.

How much does Breast Augmentation Surgery cost in Thailand? Are there packages?

If you see our plastic surgery in Thailand pricelist, you can find that the cost of breast augmentation in the country varies. The cost of breast augmentation in Thailand ranges from around 1,400 USD to 6,000 USD, depending on the medical center, surgeon's experience, the type of implant that is used, and the placement of the implant. There is usually no significant difference between the price of breast augmentation in Bangkok and the price of breast augmentation in other areas in Thailand, but hospitals and clinics in Bangkok may offer higher prices.

In general, the cost of breast augmentation in Thailand is lower than in most Western countries. For example, one of the best plastic surgery hospital in Bangkok, Sikarin Hospital, offer affordable breast augmentation price starting from around 3,300 USD (for round implants). This price can include a one night stay in the hospital and other facilities. In the United States, the cost of the same procedure may vary from 6,000 USD to 12,000 USD, and you may need to pay a lot of other additional costs.

Many hospitals and clinics in Thailand also offer packages, such as airport transfer, accommodation, local transportation booking, and a relaxing holiday. Not only for breast augmentation, but there are also other breast enhancement packages in Thailand, such as breast reduction surgery packages and breast lift surgery packages.
