Commonly known as the 'Boob Job'; Breast Implants or Breast Augmentation / Breast Enhancement / Breast Enlargement Surgery or Breast Implants are the terms used to describe increasing the size and/or changing the shape of the female breasts. A surgical procedure where silicone or saline implants are inserted behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle. With both techniques, the implant is behind the milk ducts so that future breastfeeding is not affected.
The silicone implant is by far the most popular choice as they're considered to appear more natural when compared to saline implants, however, silicone implants require a slightly larger incision. Different types are available based on the shape and the size, with the two most common being the Round and Teardrop Implant.
The decision to have a breast augmentation should be an informed one that takes into account the potential risks and side effects. You should also have realistic expectations about the results of breast implant surgery to avoid disappointment. There are several reasons why you might consider Breast Augmentation, for example, your breasts might be uneven, droop (ptosis), you do not like the shape or size, after pregnancy. After a Mastectomy, you may need to get reconstructive breast surgery.
What Type of breast implant to choose
Silicone and Saline are the two types of Breast implants to choose from and there are pros and cons for each choice. You will make your choice based on guidance from your surgeon and what best suits your requirement.
Silicone gel implants are pre-filled before they are inserted with a silicone substance which means the implants can be used for Breast shape or size. Another big advantage with silicone is it moves and is also soft and will feel very natural. One type of silicone gel has a textured surface and can limit problems for example hardening.
Cohesive gel implants are strong and durable and will feel very natural and are filled with very thick silicone. If the implants were to split, they would not leak and they would retain their shape and size.
Saline implants can be pre-filled or filled after placement into your breast using a value. They are very soft and will give you a Natural feel and are very safe to use. There are several disadvantages to using them as they may rupture or reduce in size or wrinkle earlier than other implants.
Breast implant surgery is normally a quick procedure and in most cases, you are allowed to go home afterward, as with all medical procedures you could be kept in overnight. The normal time length of the procedure is 1 to 1.5 hours.
Before the start of the procedure, your surgeon will agree with you the location of the cut, taking into consideration the size and shape and the location of where the scars will be. All located in different locations there are 3 types of cuts which can be used: inframammary fold, periareolar incision, axillary incision
Once the location of the cut is agreed, the procedure can be started. The implant will be put in place between your breast tissue and your chest muscle or behind your chest muscle. When the surgeon has put the implants in, the incisions will be stitched and protected with a dressing.
Reconstructive breast surgery can be carried out after mastectomy using skin, Muscle and Tissue (Tummy or Thigh or Buttock) taken from your body to form a new Breast. Another method will be to have Breast implants fitted.
If you have had a single or double mastectomy you may choose to have immediate or delayed reconstruction.
Additional factors to consider:
1. Recovery time and Risk: After having breast implant surgery, you may be worried that your breast implants look unnatural. This is normal and to begin with your breasts are likely to feel quite taut or rigid.
You may also experience changes in the way your breasts feel, with different areas becoming more or less sensitive than they used to be. In most cases, any changes in sensation will be temporary, although they can occasionally be permanent. Your breasts will usually start to look and feel more natural within a few months of having breast implant surgery, as the breast tissue, muscle and skin stretch to accommodate the implants.
For the best results, you should follow the aftercare advice of your surgeon. You will usually need to attend a series of post-operative appointments so your surgeon can check your recovery.
Following breast augmentation surgery, avoid getting your wounds wet for one week, sleeping face down for one month, any physical exercise for four weeks, heavy lifting for three to four weeks, driving for at least one week or until you can perform an emergency stop without discomfort.
Some surgeons also recommend wearing a tight-fitting sports bra 24 hours a day for up to three months following breast surgery.
It is recommended that you take around two weeks off work after the operation to fully recover. You should be mobile from day one and back to full exercise within six weeks. You should keep the incision sites out of direct sunlight for about a year.
Contact your local doctor or surgeon immediately if you have any symptoms you were not expecting or if you experience severe pain. Possible warning signs include: severe pain in your breast(s), an intense burning sensation in your breast(s), unusual, unexpected or excessive swelling in or around your breast(s),deflated breast(s), a smelly or colored discharge from your wounds, a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or more, any lumps or aching that are causing you concern.
2. Success rates are extremely high, at 98-99%. Post-op complications usually center around the scar healing process and the feeling/positioning of the implant, which is why physiotherapy is so essential.
3. Patient reviews: The vast majority of patients are extremely pleased with the level of professionalism and emotional support with the entire process leading up to and following the surgery. Often the increase in self-confidence is considered the biggest positive from the procedure. Before and after photos are available online with patient comments.
