What you need to know about Mommy Makeover in Thailand

The Mommy Makeover has become a term used for the combination of breast augmentation or uplift and tummy tuck and is often performed in the years following childbirth. It has been widely adopted in the US and its popularity increases year on year throughout the rest of the world - Thailand is an ever-popular destination for the mommy makeover now.

With the procedure consisting of breast augmentation and tummy tuck - the combined surgical operation is performed under a general anesthetic and will take between 2-3 hours. Those opting for the mini tummy tuck may be able to leave the hospital on the same day, whereas a full tummy tuck will require at least an overnight stay in hospital.

As the breasts and abdomen are the primary areas of change with motherhood, a mommy makeover will often center on a breast and abdomen procedure. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the breasts will also enlarge, increasing as much as a one cup size or more. However, returning back to 'normal' can mean a significant loss in breast volume and noticeable sagging. Throughout a pregnancy, the abdominal muscles, skin, and tissues stretch to safely accommodate the growing baby. Unfortunately, after childbirth, these layers may not bounce back to their taut, pre-baby shape.

The Procedure

As the mommy makeover consists of multiple different surgeries, each case is unique but generally, the procedure begins with anesthetizing the patient - general anesthesia is used. The rest of the procedure is briefly described below:

  • Tummy tuck: in this, a small incision is given at your pubic bone. Muscles of your stomach are tightened at this point. Excessive fat is removed through liposuction. Loose skin is excised. There various types of a tummy tuck. Which one should be chosen is decided in accordance with the laxity of your muscles. Some require small incisions; hence, fewer scars. While others need a relatively larger incision. After the procedure, the incision is stitched and bandages are applied over it.
  • Breast lift: in this surgery, an incision is given around your areola which extends downwards and horizontally. loose breast tissue is removed to lift them up. Sometimes, nipple and areola are shifted to a higher level. In this way, your bust is restored and given a more rounded contour. Incisions are sewn and the wound is bandaged.
  • Breast augmentation: an incision is given around your areola and Silicone implants are inserted into your breasts to increase the size. Nipple-areola complex (NAC) is preserved during the procedure so that your lactational ability is not affected. Stitches are given and bandaging is applied.
  • Stretch marks removal: a sudden stretch of the skin due to pregnancy and then sudden loosening after delivery causes the collagen in your dermis to breakdown leaving stretch marks on your skin. Proper moisturization can reduce stretching. Laser treatment is available to fade away stretch marks.

However, patients don't have to stop there; a mommy makeover can also include a thigh lift, arm lift, Butt lift or Brazilian butt lift. Depending on the individual surgeon and the recommended set of procedures, a mommy makeover can be performed during one single operation, or for safety reasons, may be spread out over multiple surgical sessions.

The mommy makeover is a combination of invasive techniques, so choose the best and most experienced plastic surgeon available; never risk your health and safety to cut corners or save money.

Length of Stay in Thailand

It is an inpatient procedure and can last from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the individual procedures involved. A one or two days stay is needed at the hospital after which you are discharged. Still, you have to stay in Thailand for at least 10-14 days for regular check-ups. During this time, your physical condition is closely monitored and your stitches are removed after 10 days, at which point you're free to travel home.

Recovery Time

It takes 2 to 3 months to recover from these plastic surgery procedures. A Tummy tuck requires a long recovery period. Out of these 2 to 3 months, only 2 weeks bed rest is needed. 2 to 3 weeks off work is essential, after which you can get back to it. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 8 weeks. Results of postpartum plastic surgery would be evident after some time.

Success Rate

Virtually all the mothers who go through the mommy makeover find the outcome to be most rewarding, with their physical beauty being enhanced and their body shape restored to a pre-pregnancy figure. It is advised to wait for at least 6 months after giving birth before considering a mommy makeover of any kind and that is assuming you are not planning on having another baby.

After Care

You should consider the following points to take care of yourself post-surgery:

  • Visit your doctor for regular check-ups.
  • Take your medicines regularly according to the prescription.
  • Follow a healthy diet plan for a quick recovery.
  • Ensure the presence of someone with you.
  • Get help to look after your children if they're particularly young.
  • Keep your feet and head elevated after the surgery.
  • Give yourself plenty of time to recover.
  • Do not take baths when you have bandages and stitches intact. Wet bandages can be the cause of infection.
  • Do not lift your baby or any other heavy object for some time. It can put pressure on your stitches.
  • Be vigilant and look for the signs of infection, soreness, and redness. Contact your doctor immediately if you find any of them.
  • Sleep with extra pillows to support you.

Alternatives to Mommy Makeover

Surgery should never be the first option because it has its own complications and risks. You should consider other available options before going for a surgical procedure. Following are some alternatives to the mommy makeover surgery:

  • Dieting: a healthy diet plan made by a nutritionist can help you lose weight. Low carb diet begins ketosis in your body burning your body fat.
  • Exercise: it is very effective in losing weight and getting your body shape back. Exercise increases your muscle strength and tightens them.
  • Laser treatment: a laser is applied on to your skin to lighten your stretch marks. It can lighten your marks, making your skin look young and healthy.

Before and After Mommy Makeover

Before going through mommy makeover surgery, you may have sagging breasts, enlarged tummy, and flat buttocks - your body lacks its former shape. There are stretch marks on your body after pregnancy. However, after going through postpartum plastic surgery, your physical beauty is enhanced. Your breasts are lifted and augmented. Your tummy is flattened. Stretch marks are reduced and your butt is lifted. You again look like what you used to be before pregnancy.
